I visited Newton Abbot last weekend and happened to meet a lady who lived in Starcross. She was interested that I came from Exmouth and asked me what was decided about Elizabeth Hall.
She was really angry when she heard it was to be demolished and a hotel put there. She loved looking in the sales there on weekends. She thought it had such possibilities, and commented: “Another hotel. What will that do for Exmouth?”
Then she asked me: “What is that huge industrial-type building on the seafront?” You can guess her astonishment when I said it was a bowling alley.
I added that there were plans to demolish further past this building and her last remark was: “Your council hasn’t got any taste whatsoever!”
So much for the ‘grand plan’. Will that be the typical comment of visitors?
If so, the town is in for hard times.
Visitors’ opinions do count, as they contribute to the wealth of the area and there are many rivals for their time and patronage.
