Police have advised residents in the Budleigh Salterton area and surrounding villages to “keep an eye” on their oil tanks.

It follows a spate of heating oil thefts over the festive period.

Diesel and petrol are the main targets of thieves as prices remain high, but thefts of heating oil are an increasing problem.

PCSO Sarah Trayhurn said: “There have been a number of fuel thefts in rural areas over the last few weeks.

“Horse lorries have been the main target, but I would advise that residents also keep a regular eye on central heating fuel tanks.”
