A top teenage chef has earned a place in the national final of the UK’s biggest cooking challenge.

Katie England, 14, a student at Exmouth Community College, won the regional final of the Springboard FutureChef 2014 competition.

Young aspiring chefs gathered together to showcase their fantastic cooking skills at the South West regional final held at the prestigious River Cottage HQ.

The culinary hopefuls have already battled hard to get to this regional event, winning their local heats.

But now Katie goes on to represent the South West as regional champion at the national final on Monday, March 24, in London.

Springboard’s FutureChef programme is a nationwide culinary initiative which helps young people aged 12 to 16 cook their way through a series of challenges, providing invaluable life lessons and an insight into the hospitality industry.

Katie impressed the judges with her winning menu of pan roast hake with Parma ham followed by apple and pear tarte tatin with caramel sauce and cinnamon mascarpone.

Head judge Stephen Lamb from River Cottage said: “All the judges were impressed by the standard of all the competitors.

“Katie’s dishes were well considered and really demonstrated the importance of using quality seasonal products.”

Katie said: “I was absolutely overwhelmed that I won. The standard was so good – everyone is a winner really.”

Springboard’s head of youth programmes, Neil Medhurst, said: “The Springboard FutureChef Competition is the UK’s biggest cooking challenge.

“It inspires students to learn to cook, introduces them and their schools to well respected industry chefs, offers the opportunity to win fantastic prizes and ultimately they gain anything from a valuable life skill, to an informed career path into the UK’s leisure and hospitality industry.”
