Sixteen-year-old Exmouth Community College student Katie England won a district young MasterChef-style competition and now goes on to compete in the South West heats.

The National Young Chef Competition is promoted by Rotary International in Britain and Ireland (RIBI) and sponsored by olive oil manufacturers Filippo Berio.

It is a four-stage national competition to support and encourage development of cookery skills, writes David Beasley.

The competition is open to all students in full time education, between the ages 11 and 17.

Organised by local rotary clubs and hosted by Exmouth Community and Exeter colleges, the winner of each local heat is entered into a district (Devon) final.

Frank Hart-Venn, Exmouth Rotary Club’s chairman of youth services, said: “This competition aims to encourage young people to cook a healthy meal, develop food presentation skills, consider food hygiene issues, develop their organisational and planning skills, and develop their ability to cope in a demanding situation.”

Katie’s tutor, Sarah Souter, said: “I am delighted. Her extraordinary culinary skills and commitment has brought the success she deserves.”

Katie now goes on to compete in the regional heats in Cornwall.
