Exmouth RNLI thanked six-year-old Joe Stanbury for raising £83 for the lifeboat station

Exmouth RNLI’s funds have been given a welcome boost thanks to the efforts of a six-year-old boy.

Joe Stanbury, from Tedburn St Mary, near Exeter, presented Exmouth RNLI with £83 after arranging a school bake sale.

The youngster was inspired to raise funds for the RNLI after he was last year named a winner of the charity’s design a Christmas card competition and was invited to the lifeboat training college, in Poole, as part of his prize.

Hearing of Joe’s fundraising success, volunteers from Exmouth RNLI invited the youngster to present his cheque to crew volunteers and watch the all-weather lifeboat training exercise off Exmouth beach.

Joe’s mum, Nel, said visiting the Exmouth lifeboat station and meeting the crew had been an ‘extra treat’.

Joe’s Christmas card design prize included a two-night stay and tour of the lifeboat college at Poole, plus a hit the surf session with RNLI lifeguards.

Inspired by his visit, Joe spoke about the charity at school during an assembly then held a cake sale, presenting the proceeds to Exmouth RNLI.

Joe’s dad, Brian, said: “‘Joe’s cake stall was positioned strategically by the door of the school hall, so all the children had to file past Joe’s creations to leave.

“Joe made 118 cupcakes and raised £83 on the day. We are very proud of him.”
