An Exmouth teenager who spotted something ‘shiny’ on Shelly Beach while on a walk with his friend discovered it was, in fact, a washed up jellyfish.

Sixteen-year-old Luke Lambrechts, of St Andrew’s Road, couldn’t resist snapping a picture of the gelatinous creature when he realised what it was.

“We were walking along the Imperial [recreational ground] and saw a shiny thing on the beach,” he said.

“I knew it was a jellyfish but I did not know what type it was.

“I guessed it was a barrel jellyfish because my brother is a kite boarder and has encountered them before.”

It’s not the first sighting in the area either, as more jellyfish continue to swim to the UK because of recent sunny weather.

Reports have surfaced over the last few weeks about divers encountering the creatures in Cornish and Dorset waters.

The NHS say that most jellyfish stings are mild and do not require treatment, or can be treated yourself.

However, sting recipients should dial 999 if there are ‘severe symptoms’, such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, or if a large or sensitive area of the body has been stung.
