A Brixington businessman, who was a non-swimmer just four months ago, is taking on the Ironman challenge for charity, after his four children laid down the gauntlet.

Father-of-four Dave Calland, 35, joint owner of Budgens in Brixington, is aiming to complete a 1.2-mile lake swim, cycle 90km and run a half marathon in less than eight hours.

He is taking on the challenge alongside 2,000 other competitors on June 16 in the Wimbleball Ironman UK event in Exmoor National Park.

It follows a challenge laid down by his four boys and Dave said: “It’s a personal challenge.

“We have always watched triathlons and Ironman on TV and they said ‘Dad, I bet you can’t do that’.”

Since then Dave has undergone a gruelling regime of training twice daily, six days a week: “I feel fit and strong but I have been training so hard I’m a bit disappointed as I thought I would be carved out of wood by now!

“Training has been going well but if I have one concern, it is that I was a non-swimmer four months ago and I have not swum in open water before and with 2,000 other athletes, it’s going to be interesting.

“But I’m looking forward to it.”

Dave hopes to raise £1,000 for Scope, a charity his shop has always supported.

On Saturday, March 16, he will be training in-shop on his bike.

If you want to support Dave, donate to the charity boxes in store.
