Hospital bus cash bid to be submitted

Civic leaders have agreed to go ahead with their funding bid for a bus to serve the revamped Budleigh Salterton Hospital.

The idea of a bus was proposed by town mayor Steve Hall and Budleigh Salterton Town Council last year, with the intention it would be paid for by the Parishes Together Fund (PTF) – money available to collaborating parishes from Devon County Council and East Devon District Council (EDDC).

After talking to other councils in the area, Budleigh has managed to bring Exmouth, Lympstone, East Budleigh, Otterton and Colaton Raleigh on board with the idea, and Budleigh town councillors formally agreed to go ahead with the application at their meeting this week.

The cost of the bus will be around £21,000, and it is thought that the parishes together application will bring in £12,000.

Councillor Hall told town councillors that the next step would be to apply to a committee at EDDC which administers money left over from previous PTF funding periods.

He said: “There is quite a substantial amount of money and for projects like this they are willing to let some of that money go.

“We are hoping it will be enough to top up [the funding] to let us purchase the bus.”

The Exmouth and District Community Transport Group previously confirmed that it had agreed to run the new bus, which would serve the whole of the NHS’s Woodbury, Exmouth and Budleigh locality, and as well as serving the new health and wellbeing hub at Budleigh could also take patients to Exmouth Hospital.
