Fellow-voters, is it not time that we went on strike?

Let us strike for a picturesque future for Exmouth, and let us deny our vote to any councillor who does not support the Friends of Elizabeth Hall and their project to retain an historical feature of our seafront, a seafront which is valued by our visitors for its quaintness and elegance of the past.

Who wants to see there a large, brick block with rows of staring windows calling itself a Premier Inn? Or any other modern slab of concrete defacing our precious Esplanade?

Here are 12,000 heartfelt petitioners who want to know the reason why! And sixty bedrooms? Where will they find the parking for 60 plus cars? Only by pushing aside, in their couldn’t-care-less pursuit of cash, the residents of this town and those who come from far and wide to stroll along our Esplanade.

I agree with every word of the article on page 7 of the Journal of October 11, and especially with the reference to East Devon District Council’s ‘Big Brother’ attitude towards Exmouth.

When I first retired here from the well-organised London borough of Brent, where I had engaged in its politics for 30 years, I was struck immediately by the anomalous structure of East Devon’s local government.

In my view, EDDC is entirely surplus to requirements, and we taxpayers must be subsidising an awful lot of extra overheads.

So I say, let us withdraw our vote and let us not return to the county or the town hall, and especially not to EDDC, any councillor who does not support Elizabeth Hall.

There is a county election due next May, and district and town council elections in 2015. We citizens hold the power and the choices in our hands!

If your local councillor is one of the turncoats denying the force of a 12,000-strong petition, and the support that outnumbers the normal willing-to-vote population of all-Exmouth, vote for one of the minor party candidates instead, such as UKIP or the Green Party.

I feel sure that any BNP candidate standing here would be sure to take note of such a strong expression of our opinion.

To deny us our clearly-expressed wishes, to deny the will of the people, is a denial of the Localism Policy expressed by the current Coalition Government.

For this reason I am sending a copy of this letter to our Member of Parliament, Hugo Swire, for his information as to the situation brewing here in Exmouth.
