An historic tree, which is believed to have stood at Bicton College for nearly 200 years, has fallen victim to recent storms.

The monkey puzzle tree, which stood approximately 25 metres high, was one of an avenue of trees which were planted along the driveway to the college in 1844.

The college believes the tree has stood on the site since then, having been five years old when it was planted, before strong winds at the weekend brought it down through a nearby fence.

College principal David Henley said: “Bicton’s Monkey Puzzle Avenue, which shapes our unique driveway up to the college, is an iconic landmark in the area.

“The relentless weather of recent weeks has sadly taken its toll on one of our prized monkey puzzle trees, which regrettably could not withstand the continuous high winds and torrential rain.

“Fortunately, our arboriculture students are on hand to tackle the fallen tree, and our horticulture students have been cultivating fledgling trees from previously collected seeds, so we will continue to conserve Monkey Puzzle Avenue for generations to come.”
