Haldon Hill will undergo bank revamp

14:17 09 January 2014

Trees will be removed amid fears of shallow soil collapsing onto the road.

Trees will be cut down and removed alongside the A38 bank at Haldon Hill as a stabilisation effort gets under way.

The process will start on Monday, January 13 and is expected to be finished by the end of February.

Lane one of the westbound carriageway will be closed for the duration of the work, which is to be carried out 24 hours a day.

A full westbound closure will also be in operation between 8pm and 4am, and during the night time closures a signed diversion will be in place.

Highways Agency project sponsor Mike Hillier said: “This work is necessary to improve safety and road conditions in this area and to ensure that the bank remains stable.

“All trees over 75mm diameter and shrubs over 100mm diameter will be removed. Where gaps are left, new planting will be carried out using local shrub species that will provide a stabilising effect on the bank.”

Arboriculturalists will cut the trees down during the day which will be removed overnight using a crane, which will minimise damage to the soil.

During the day a 600 yard section of lane one will be closed between the A380 junction at Splatford Split and Exeter Racecourse.

During the night time closures road users will be diverted on the A380 at Telegraph Hill, then the C19 to rejoin the A38 at the Exeter Racecourse junction.

“The work should cause little disruption to road users,” said Mr Hillier. “We will aim to complete it as quickly as possible to minimise any inconvenience.”
