A 48-home development at Greenway Lane was approved by district planners last week under delegated powers.

East Devon District Council granted permission for Cavannah Homes to begin construction on land adjacent to the old allotments.

Outline permission had previously been granted in August.

District councillor Tom Wright said: “This scheme will provide much needed affordable housing, a total of 18 homes.

“The scheme also increased the area of allotments which will allow more Budleigh residents the opportunity to enjoy gardening and produce their own fruit and vegetables.”

He said that while the availability of allotments had been delayed by three months ‘the effects of the atrocious and abnormal weather were impossible to overcome’.

The 48 homes make up just under half of the 100 needed homes up to 2026, identified in the draft local plan.

District councillor Alan Dent said: “It provides much needed affordable housing and not only retains the allotments but actually increases the number of plots available to local residents.”

The allocation of the allotments will take place at Budleigh Salterton Public Hall on March 9.
