TOILETS costing £150,000 are set to be built on Exmouth seafront in time for Easter, following the go-ahead from planners.

The toilets will be built between the old RNLI Station and the new bowling alley - the existing toilets at that location, which are costly to maintain and do not meet current British Standards, will be demolished this week.

In addition, the new East Devon District Council (EDDC) toilets will be open all year round and include both disabled and baby changing facilities.

During construction and as an ongoing additional facility, EDDC is making the toilets at The Pavilion available to the public, subject to the building’s opening hours - a sign will be put up indicating to the public that the toilets are availbale for use.

It follows concerns of a lack of public toilets on the seafront - once the old toilets have been demolished there will not any public conveniences for 1.5 miles between the marina and the Foxholes car park.

The new toilets will contain six unisex cubicles, one male urinal, one unisex accessible WC, and one unisex baby changing facility.

These will be free and open to the public all year round, 8am to 10pm during the summer and 8am to 7pm during winter months.

An EDDC spokesman said: “Although fewer in number, it should be remembered that the existing toilets are actually under-utilised with the ‘optional’ ten female toilets never actually used in the last three years.

“The new toilets, along with the refurbishment of the Old Lifeboat Station for Exmouth Rowing Club, forms the first part of the Queen’s Drive regeneration.

“The new leisure area is a key element of the Exmouth Vision plans to change the town centre and seafront to establish the resort as an attractive 21st century destination for residents, businesses and visitors.”

The £150,000 has been generated from the planning obligations that come from the sale of the Elizabeth Hall site.
