Going extra mile

The Journal (January 26) reports that Marpool Primary School is searching for a new lollipop person.

Without doubt, this is an extremely responsible service, but, in these severe economic times, surely it would be possible to utilise the people who are already willing and able to serve our community, ie our elected ward councillors. After all, the only qualifications needed for the position are the use of common sense and road and public awareness.

Such a small, part-time job would enable these people who put themselves forward, and feel they represent us, to communicate at grass roots level while performing a worthwhile duty, to prove they really do care about the community they have chosen to serve, and are going that extra mile. Indeed, perhaps, even acting as a dog warden would be beneficial to every street in the area.

Such a small, public-spirited, voluntary service to the community would be rewarded by a points system which, when voting time arrives for those choosing to stand for re-election, the councillor who has physically worked in the community (and not the loudest mouth) would be allowed to stand again for re-election.

On the other hand, any prospective new person considering standing for election for the first time would have to sign a declaration stating they are prepared to attend to community jobs - no matter what. Obviously, travelling allowances would be permitted, within reason.

If these people were not willing to attend to community employment then they are not worthy of a job on the council. Such a system would give these councillors a more practical experience of problems that many of us encounter daily.
