Exmouth youngsters are being offered a new chance to learn outdoor skills and improve their self-esteem.

Exmouth Forest School will be offering sessions for children of all ages, from toddlers to 16-year-olds, at its woodland site, following a model which has been successfully running at Exeter Forest School for 18 months.

To give everyone a taste of what it’s all about, the school is holding an open day this Saturday (June 21).

Exmouth Forest School manager Nick Murphy said: “On the open day we’re going to offer a range of activities, including green woodworking, basic tool use, some firelighting, and a bit of campfire cooking.

“It’s all designed to give children achievable goals. Over time the idea is to give them a sense of respect for the outdoors and conservation.”

The school is based at a site at Leeford Woods, Knowle Hill, which has been leased by Clinton Devon Estates.

From July, the school is to offer toddler groups, where youngsters up to four years old attend with their parents to enjoy activities such as campfire singing and explore the environment.

The school will also offer activities on alternate Saturdays for youngsters and whole families.

Nick said: “It’s about getting everyone outdoors. The main ethos is it’s totally child-led. They have the ideas and we facilitate what they want to do.

“It gets them working at their best together, helps kids to socialise, promotes teamwork and builds self-esteem.”

Saturday’s open day runs from 11am to 4pm.
