Visitors to Bicton Park have been enjoying a wonderful display of colour thanks to the annual flower festival at the estate’s church.

St Mary’s Church, which sits inside the botanical gardens, had hosted the annual blooms for many years, before it closed to regular worship two years ago.

Although the building no longer serves as a parish church, gardens owner Valerie Lister did not want the festival to end, so she asked the group she refers to as the Bicton Flower Ladies, who arranged the festival, to continue.

They have done so, and this year’s event again saw visitors able to enjoy the painstakingly arranged display.

Margaret Hepple, one of the ladies involved, said: “The ten of us that are left now were very glad when Mrs Lister said she would like the flower festival to go on.

“It has been very successful. A lot of people when they walk around the grounds have come in, and have been very impressed by our work, which is nice.”
