Line between Axminster and Honiton remains closed as more heavy rain washes away repair work

South West Trains this afternoon (Sunday, November 25) advised passengers that there will be continued disruption on the line between Axminster and Honiton.

Engineers have been working since Wednesday to repair damage caused by flooding between the two towns as well as on the embankment at Broom Level Crossing, near Axminster.

However, heavy flooding and high winds in the south west region over the past 24 hours have caused further damage to the work sites. In addition, much of the repair work carried out by engineers over the past few days has been undone, including at Broom where steel baskets weighing 40 tonnes - installed to protect the track from further damage - were washed away.

As a result, the line between Yeovil Junction and Exeter St David’s will remain closed until further notice.

West of England services which normally run between London Waterloo and Axminster/Exeter St David’s will run between London Waterloo and Yeovil Junction only. A replacement bus service will continue to operate between Yeovil Junction and Exeter St David’s until the line can re-open.

A spokesperson for the South West Trains/Network Rail alliance said: “Unfortunately the severe weather conditions that are affecting transport across the south west have had a serious impact on our ability to re-open the West of England line between Exeter St David’s and Yeovil Junction.

“Regrettably much of the work we had already carried out has been undone by heavy rain and winds, and we understand there is more bad weather to come. Nevertheless, our engineers are back on site, and will work overnight if the weather allows, to repair the latest damage and re-open the line as quickly as possible.

“We would like to thank our customers for their patience during this challenging time and reassure them that we are doing our utmost to restore train services as quickly as possible. Sadly, on this occasion the weather seems to have beaten us in terms of being able to run trains tomorrow morning but we will continue operating the contingency plan that was in place last week to get passengers where they need to be.”
