County hall has qualified for more emergency flood-repair funding.

The council is now expecting £2.5 million towards the cost of repairs and the clean-up following last year’s September and December flooding.

However, the support only covers a fraction of the estimated £12.2million of damage.

Grant aid for repairs after the flooding in July and November had previously been confirmed by Government and Devon is due to send its £1.7million bill to the department of communities today (Thursday).

Devon County Council leader John Hart said: “We lobbied both the Environment Secretary Owen Paterson and David Cameron when they visited Devon to see the devastation that the storms wreaked on the county.

“I am delighted that the Government has recognised the problems that Devon faces…we will keep up our campaign to ensure that Devon receives as much help as possible in clearing up the aftermath of these unprecedented storms and in boosting the long-term resilience of our rail and road systems.”
