The largest private collection of images depicting Exmouth over the last 150 years can now be yours to own.
From this week, Sleeman’s Gentleman’s Outfitters in Exeter Road, the oldest business in Exmouth to be run by the same family from the same premises, has begun reproducing the old images for sale as a range of picture postcards.
The images come from the ‘Sleeman Collection’, thousands of original photos collected by George Sleeman and then his son, Bill Sleeman, since the shop’s original opening in 1907 – many of the pictures have never been seen before in public.
Bill, who died in 2009, collected an unparalleled archive of thousands of photographs charting the history of Exmouth including the docks, the old Strand, Chapel Street pre-Magnolia Centre, the seafront and a range of famous faces of a bygone era.
However, the true extent of the collection wasn’t realised until after Bill’s death, when his nephew Julian unearthed and began to catalogue the treasure trove
Bill’s family, who now run the business, are using their choice picks of the collection for picture postcards.
