A father and sons trio of adventurers are preparing to attempt a world record cycle ride right across Canada in aid of street children.

Mike Noel-Smith, 56, and his sons Will, 27, and Harry, 21, a former Exmouth Community College pupil, are aiming to cycle from Vancouver to Halifax – a distance of 3,751 miles - in less than 13 days, six hours and 13 minutes, beating the previous fastest time.

The family, who until recently lived in Woodbury and Budleigh, are expecting to be joined on the trip by family friend Hasan Al Hosini, from the United Arab Emirates.

They are taking on the challenge to raise funds for StreetInvest, which helps street children around the world.

To complete the journey in the target time, the cyclists, who call themselves team Raw Discovery, will have to ride an average daily distance of 300 miles and spend up to 18 hours each day in the saddle. They will also have to eat and drink most of their nutrition while riding, stopping only to restock supplies or to catch an hour or two of sleep.

The family, now based in Chippenham, have previously rowed from Normandy to Cornwall for charity, but believe this will be a tougher test.

Mike said: “The task would be gruelling enough even for experienced cyclists but we are novices at this, making the task even more daunting.

“But, we are confident that our love of fitness challenges - and our Olympic and world champion triathlete coach, Bill Black, plus cycle experts Total Fitness Bath - will be able to lead us to success.

“We’re doing this because it’s the best way we know to support these vulnerable children. Their strength – against the odds – will keep us going through every painful mile.”

The family also have a personal connection to the charity, as Mike’s twin sister Felix Holman is its director of programmes.

The ride begins in June. To sponsor them, visit www.justgiving.com/RawDiscovery
