Exmouth war vet in line for Russian Ushakov Medal

A HEAVILY decorated Exmouth war veteran could be in line for a prestigious military medal from the Russian Federation.

Commander (William) Mark Harlock RN – who retired to the town 30 years ago and lives on Camperdown Terrace – has been invited to apply for the Ushakov Medal.

The decoration – named in honour of Russian admiral Fyodor Ushakov, the patron saint of the Russian navy – has recently been awarded to British veterans who played a role in the World War Two Arctic convoys.

In 1943, Mark Harlock became Gunnery and Torpedo Officer aboard HMS Vigilant, a V-Class Destroyer. He helped to escort three of the convoys, from Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands to Murmansk in North Russia, in challenging conditions.

In addition, he personally escorted a Russian admiral from Murmansk to London via Scapa Flow to see Churchill.

Mark Harlock, 92, was awarded the Arctic Star - the campaign medal awarded for service above the Arctic – earlier this year.

His other medals include the Atlantic Star, Africa Star, Burma Star with Pacific Clasp, Defence Medal, Malta Medal, Soviet 40th Anniversary Medal and 1939-45 Star.

The Ushakov Medal is an extremely prestigious honour. Early recipients received the decoration from British Prime Minister David Cameron and Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this year.
