Exmouth vet raises £500 in half marathon

Andrea Lynch, a vet at Exmouth's Raddenstiles veterinary practice, recently ran Exeter's half marathon, raising nearly £500 for the charity PetSavers.

A VET who works at an Exmouth veterinary practice has been putting her best foot forward to raise nearly £500 for an animal charity.

Andrea Lynch, who works at Raddenstiles Veterinary Centre in Exmouth and Sidford, recently competed in Exeter’s half marathon to raise money for PetSavers.

And she’s gearing up for a full marathon in her home town of Londonderry at the beginning of June.

Andrea was inspired to take on Exeter’s 13.1-mile challenge following the fundraising efforts of friends and colleagues.

“I come from a sporty family, and felt like I was letting the side down a bit. So I needed a bit of a challenge – and some motivation!

“I’ve seen in practice the benefits of research carried out by colleagues who have received funding from PetSavers,” said Andrea. “As they support our pets and us, I felt it was only right that I should return the support.

“This year is PetSavers’ 40th anniversary. As I was coming up for my 40th birthday, it seemed like a good idea to celebrate together.”

Although Andrea finished quite a long way down the Exeter field, she was delighted to complete the course in less than two hours, raising £486 in donations.

The money will support PetSavers in its efforts to advance the science of small animal medicine and surgery.

“I was pleased with my result because the month before I’d been out injured, unable to train. I had some physios strap me up and they did a cracking job and I had a supportive boss who allowed me time off to go to physio. I also had a lot of sponsorship from clients at the practice, so there was no way I could let them down.”

Following her Exeter run, Andrea’s now in training for the Walled City Marathon in Londonderry on June 1.

“Part of the inspiration is that my mum – who has carried the Olympic torch, has run cross country for Ireland and come 11th in her age group on the Olympic course in Hyde Park at the World Triathlon this year – will be running with me.

“I’d love to get a place, but my mum will probably spank me on the time!”
