Exmouth’s new lifeboat, the R and J Welburn, was launched to its first shout. The launch was also the first shout for Steve Hockings-Thompson in his new role as Exmouth’s RNLI coxswain.

Portland coastguard requested help from the R and J Welburn after a diver was late back returning to his group.

The lifeboat crew of the Shannon-class water jet-propelled vessel was stood down when the diver surfaced close to his party, two miles off Seaton.

It was also Exmouth RNLI coxswain Steve Hockings-Thompson’s first shout in his new role.

He said: “Although our help was not needed in this case, I was thrilled to see how quick and efficient our shore crew volunteers were able to launch for a shout.

“The increased speed of the Shannon meant we could have arrived on scene in a much faster time than on the Mersey.

“Shaving off minutes could make a crucial difference in saving lives at sea.”
