Exmouth’s Chloe wows judges in talent contest

A YOUNG singer from Exmouth is making waves as a national talent search steps up a gear.

Last month Exmouth Community College pupil Chloe Brooks-Herbert, 12, wowed the judges at the Exeter Regional Finals of TeenStar 2014.

And now Chloe has got through to the Southern England finals of the pre-teen category in Fareham next month.

If she does well there, she could appear in the competition’s grand final at Birmingham’s NEC in July.

“I’m really excited!” said Chloe. “Getting to Fareham is a big step.”

The competition was tough at Exeter, but Chloe thrived under the pressure.

“It was amazing. I was nervous, but once you get going you find that it’s fun, singing for people and sharing the type of music that you like and seeing different talents.”

Chloe sang the Dusty Springfield classic,Son Of A Preacher Man.

“I chose that song because the other competitors were mostly around my age and I tried to separate myself by choosing a song that the others might not. It went down well. You could see the older people who knew the song bopping round to it, so it felt good to know that people were enjoying what I was singing.”

The judges thought so too, praising Chloe’s vocal tone and song choice, and making helpful comments about her stage craft and act.

“It was quite constructive. And to know that they like the song choice means I can do something with that feedback in the next round.”

Chloe has been singing most of her life, starting out with occasional solos in school choirs. This experience led her to develop a contemporary style, inspired by modern and classic pop. More recently she’s had singing lessons, helping her breathing, posture and power.

“I used to sing from my throat all the time, thinking that it was a simple thing to do, but it’s taught me that it’s quite a hard thing to sing from the diaphragm.”

Chloe hopes to make singing her career.

“It’s difficult, but that’s going to be my aim,” she said. “I’m starting to write songs, and I’d love to learn the guitar so I can just add a tune once I’ve got it in my head.”

The Southern England Teenstar 2014 final is at Ferneham Hall, Fareham, PO16 7DB, on Saturday, May 10.
