Exmouth lifeboat crew recovered a body from the water during an extensive search for a missing fisherman and his boat on Monday evening.

Exmouth RNLI pulled a body from the water while searching for a missing fisherman and his vessel, at Torquay.

Exmouth’s all-weather lifeboat was launched on Monday evening to search for missing 19-foot fishing boat J.C.K after the fisherman’s family reported the vessel had failed to return. Concerns were raised for the man’s safety because of the gale force south westerly winds, at 24 mph gusting 58 mph.

A Devon and Cornwall police spokesperson said a man’s body was spotted in the water shortly before midnight.

“At 2351hrs Exmouth lifeboat located the body of a male in the water approximately three nautical miles north east of Hopes Nose. Police have notified next of kin,” said the spokesman.

The Maritime Coastguard Agency said the boat had been due to return to Torquay at 7pm, and was last seen passing Thatcher Rock at around 6.25pm.

Also involved in the search for the missing vessel were Torbay and Berry Head coastguard rescue teams, Torbay RNLI all-weather and inshore lifeboats, Exmouth and Teignmouth RNLI lifeboats, the coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Portland, and the search and rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose.

There were also three other vessels in the area helping with the search.
