AN Exmouth woman is starting 2014 with more than a spring in her step.

Sharon Wall, 44, has shed eight stone in six years, dropping from a size 24 to a slinky size 12.

And her slimming group leader has said that Sharon’s 113lb-loss is an inspiration, encouraging her to lose five stone herself.

“There were two triggers for me to start losing weight,” said Sharon, who works for NHS Occupational Health in Exeter.

“I’d gone on a flight to Dublin and I had to ask for an extra-length seat belt. It was a big thing for me. I sat there in tears the whole way.

“The other thing was my sister was having cancer treatment at London’s St Bart’s Hospital. I’d gone up there to pick her up. The lift was out of order and had to climb three flights of stairs.

“I was at my biggest – 20 stone. I remember walking into the ward and my sister said I looked a mess because I was so out of breath. I was sweating and hot and bothered.

“I looked around, thinking there’s all these people who haven’t got any choice on what’s happened to them and there’s me, slowly killing myself, just by overeating.

“And that was it. I knew I had to do something.”

Out went the packs of party cocktail sausage rolls that Sharon used to cook for herself and chomp through ‘without thinking twice about what I was doing’.

In came food portioning, inner discipline and regular attendance at Weight Watchers meetings in Exmouth.

It wasn’t easy. Although the weight gradually came off, Sharon hit a plateau. For a year the scales stayed the same.

She was inspired by new group leader, Hayley Burridge, 32, who talked to the group about “tracking” their weight.

“Something clicked and that was it,” said Sharon. “The weight started going off ever since. It’s taken some doing, but I’m glad that I’ve got there.”

“It’s an exceptional weight loss,” said Hayley. “Things that people use as excuses to fall off and put weight back on, Sharon has smashed through. She’s had leader changes, plan changes and still managed to do it. She’s an inspiration.”

Hayley says that one of the reasons she joined Weight Watchers was that she saw Sharon losing the pounds and had to do something about her own weight.

Within two years of joining the Seaton group, Hayley had shed five stone.

Hayley’s meetings are at Exeter Road Community Primary School on Saturdays at 10am. Contact Hayley on 07791 888815.
