A former Exmouth Community College student made up part of John Lennon’s face during the Olympic closing ceremony. The singer’s face was created from giant puzzle pieces.

Cherry Yeandle was ‘terrified and excited’ as one of the volunteer dancers who made up the giant puzzle pieces of John Lennon’s face at the Olympics closing ceremony.

Former Centre Stage member Cherry, 27, who now lives in East London and works as a TV programme buyer, spent the last two months rehearsing ‘intensively’’ for the show which would mark the end of the London 2012 Games.

Cherry, who grew up in Exmouth, going to Withycombe Primary School, said putting the giant face together had been a technical nightmare.

The former Exmouth Community College student said: “It went really well. We were really pleased. It was a lot of hard work that went on to make it work. It was such a small bit but we had such a great response, we were thrilled.

“I was absolutely thrilled to be involved in the Olympics. It was a terrifying and exciting experience.”

Lennon’s face was created from giant jigsaw pieces, put together by scores of volunteer dancers, which then appeared to float into the air.

Cherry, whose family live in Belle Vue Road, Exmouth, said the rehearsals had been held in a car park in Dagenham.

“We never actually rehearsed in the stadium. The first time we did it was on the night,” she said. “We were pretty frightened it wasn’t going to work. It hadn’t always worked and come together.”
