A ‘hooligan’ pet cat saved his owner’s life, clawing at her face to wake her, while she slept through two smoke alarms when a fire broke out in her kitchen

A pet moggy has been hailed a hero after saving his owner’s life when a fire broke out in a Brixington home.

Firefighters say the unidentified tabby cat should be rewarded for his efforts - clawing his 72-year-old Gibson Close owner awake when she slept through her smoke alarms.

Watch manager Nigel Snowshall said the outcome could have ended in tragedy if the cat had not turned rescuer.

Mr Snowshall said: “The cat deserves a medal. It could have just fled out of the house, or hidden, but it made an attempt to wake her up.

“The situation was getting rapidly worse. When we got there, the property was heavily smoke logged.

“The woman’s two working smoke alarms activated, but failed to wake her. She was actually woken by the cat clawing at her.

“You often find certain animals are quite intuitive to danger. It’s not unheard of.”

The pensioner, who did not want to be identified, said her ‘moggy’ pet was a ‘hooligan’. The cat was ‘out’ when the Journal reporter called.

When firefighters arrived at the woman’s home last week they found smoke from a pressure cooker had filled the house.

The ‘shaken’ owner was led to safety by firefighters after her heroic cat was discovered safe and well, hiding under a bed in an upstairs room.
