THE recent storms that brought waves crashing over Exmouth’s seafront and caused flooding in the South West region have inspired a winning cake design.

Tegan Hall – the ten-year-old from Exmouth who devised the culinary creation – is ‘ecstatic’ that she’s won a hamper of “baking goodies worth £50 and a free ticket to this weekend’s Big Cake Show at Westpoint.

Not only that but her design will take ‘pride of place’ at the show’s ‘Green Room’ for the likes of chefs Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood to enjoy.

Tegan – a pupil at Withycombe Raleigh Church of England Primary School – was among 500 entrants of the show’s colouring competition for key stage 1 and 2 pupils “to design and colour an extraordinary big cake”.

Tegan had a flood of inspirational ideas, following a chat with her mum, Kelly.

“We talked about what she wanted to design,” said Kelly. “I said ‘Think about what’s going on in the world at the moment.’

“She said, ‘There’s been a lot of flooding where we live’, and I said, ‘Why don’t you do something around that?’, and that’s what she decided to do.”

Tegan’s winning four-tier design features calm seas, the storm and the flood. “It really stood out, because it was relevant to our area and what was going on in the world at that time,” said Kelly. “So we’re quite pleased that she thought about that.”

Tegan was presented with her prize by the school’s headteacher, Mr Stephen Powley.

“She’s ecstatic about it all, she’s quite good at her art and she’s so pleased with herself,” said her mum. “And she’s really looking forward to going to the show.”

“We wanted to give primary school children the opportunity to get involved with the show,” said Mel Edwards, director of the Big Cake Show. “We think the colouring competition did just that and we can’t wait to display the other entries at the show.”

The Big Cake Show is at Westpoint on March 28-30. More details and ticket information: www.thebigcakeshow.com/
