Archant

MANY hands helped to make light work at a huge clean-up of Sandy Bay beach, near Exmouth, recently. February’s harsh storms have littered a number of local beaches with debris.

Sandy Bay took a heavy pounding during the bad weather, and its beach shack was completely wrecked.

Led by clean-up organiser Brian O’Brien from Devon Cliffs (centre, kneeling in the white T-shirt), the enthusiastic volunteers filled a number of bags with flotsam and jetsam.

“Like a lot of beaches across the country, Sandy Bay has been hit hard with massive amounts of foreign debris and the destruction of the beach shack,” said Brian.

“Our site manager and his amazing grounds team have worked flat out to deal with it and have done a great job, but more is washed in with every tide.”

It wasn’t just a thorough tidy-up.

The team was also surveying the debris to “get a clearer idea of its source” so that it could develop a strategy to deal with it.

Enthusiastic beach clean-up volunteers came from local schools and community organisations.

And there’s more beach clean-ups to come.

Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) is looking for volunteers for its Big Spring Beach Cleans, running from March 28 to 31.
