POP stardom is beckoning for a young – and talented – Exmouth singer.

Ruby May Spencer, 14, has only been singing seriously for a few months.

But her sheer raw talent has pulled her through to the South West regional finals of TeenStar 2014 this Sunday afternoon (March 30) at Exeter’s Corn Exchange.

Luke Friend won the 2013 competition, going on to become a finalist in last year’s X Factor.

Ruby’s hoping for a similar kick-start to her career, as she performs her emotive version of Sam Cooke’s A Change Is Gonna Come.

“The message is in the song really – that change is going to come,” said Ruby, who lives on Exeter Road.

“I hope to be successful with it, and I’ll be singing other songs if I get through.”

It’s all been a bit of a whirl for Ruby.

“I sang all the time when I was little,” she said. “I did a few talent shows in primary schools, and the teachers said it was good. I also used to sing for the family and they were impressed.”

Keen to see if there was potential in her daughter’s voice, Ruby’s mum Carole Crawford helped her to find vocal coach Hannah Wood of Exeter’s Vocal Arts.

“We first met Hannah about six months ago, and she’s been a great support,” said Carole. “When Ruby first sung in front of her, Hannah was ‘Oh!’, and it’s gone on. Ruby did her first student gig after the second week. She just threw her in.”

Singing is boosting Ruby’s confidence.

“I was self-conscious,” she said. “I wouldn’t have been able to go up on a stage a year ago, not even six months ago. I had no confidence and Hannah has given me all that confidence. It’s helping me in other areas… everything really.”

Ruby, who loves blues, R&B, reggae and soul, says her biggest inspiration is Amy Winehouse, closely followed by Nina Simone.

She hopes her singing career will develop.

“That would be really cool if it did.”
