Exmouth’s Royal British Legion branch is holding a 90th birthday service on Sunday, September 24.
The Exmouth branch of the Royal British Legion is celebrating its 90th anniversary with a service on Sunday, September 24, at 2pm.
The service will be held at Holy Trinity church and everyone is welcome.
The President of the Exmouth branch, Dave Turner, told the Journal: “This is a great opportunity to celebrate all the tremendous work the Exmouth branch does with the help of the generous support of the whole of Exmouth and surrounding areas.”
An extract from the minutes for January 27, 1927 stated: “A general meeting was held of ex-servicemen in the YMCA Hall, Exmouth for the purpose of forming a branch of the British Legion in Exmouth.
“Capt W Manning presided and an address was given by Mr A Kennedy-Hunt (organising secretary to the SW area).
“After several questions had been put and satisfactorily answered by Mr Kennedy-Hunt, the chairman moved that a branch of the British Legion be formed in Exmouth.
“Mr H Carter seconded and the motion was carried unanimously.”
According to a report on the meeting in the Exmouth Journal of the time, there had been two previously unsuccessful attempts to form a branch in the town, so the Exmouth branch could well have been celebrating 100 years.
Only two weeks after its formation on February 14, 1927, the first welfare request was received and dealt with.
The widow of an ex-Royal Navy seaman was granted three shillings per week for herself and three shillings per week for her child for two months.
This was to be in the form of vouchers on local tradesmen for groceries, bread and meat. A grant of £3 was also made towards funeral expenses.
Ever since then, the branch has been at the forefront of helping and supporting former servicemen and their families.
New members are being urged to come forward.
An Exmouth Royal British Legion branch spokesman said: “you will be made welcome - why not come to the birthday service and have a chat?”
If you’d like to join this worthwhile charity group then pop along to the next meeting on September 27, at 7.30pm at the Wings bar, Imperial Road.
