IT’S a big leap from the Exmouth sand dunes to the Sahara, but two friends are currently in training near the town’s beach as they prepare to tackle the world’s hottest desert.

Charlotte Moore, 21, from Salterton Road and Sian Pidgeon, 23, from Withycombe Road, will be trekking the Sahara in November to raise money for Exeter
Hospiscare.

Charlotte says it’s the biggest physical challenge that she’s ever faced, but the care, attention and support that the charity gave her mother and her family in 2012 are driving her on.

“Hospiscare is a charity close to my heart,” she said. “My mum became ill with cancer and was put into Exeter hospice for her final week.

“I cannot speak highly enough of the staff at this hospice and the amazing work they do.

“They not only took care of my mum and did their best to make her feel as comfortable as possible, but they also made such an effort to help my family and I through this difficult time.

“We will never forget the work the hospice did for us, which is why I wanted to take part in this event.”

The Sahara trek is Hospiscare’s first-ever overseas challenge. Around 28 people will be trekking for four days in generally flat terrain. “But,” says the charity, “the heat and basic camping environment can be a challenge.”

Charlotte has never done anything like it before.

“I’ve only done Race For Life and cake sales, and things like that, so we’ve started training,” she said.

“Sian and I go jogging about two or three times a week, around Exmouth, up and down Douglas Avenue and down the beach.

“It’s going well. It’s not as tiring now and we’re getting a little bit better!”

Both girls need to raise £1,500 each as a minimum amount of sponsorship. To sponsor Charlotte and Sian, go to www.justgiving.com/charlottemoore24 and www.justgiving.com/sian-pidgeon.
