Retired RNLI man Andrew Rodger has received an eight-week jail sentence, suspended for two years, after admitting downloading indecent photographs and images of children.

A retired Exmouth charity worker, from Littleham, who admitted downloading child pornography, has received a suspended jail sentence.

Andrew Rodger, 57, who served HM Coastguard for 30 years and Exmouth RNLI as deputy launching authority for five years, retiring in 2011, was given an eight-week suspended jail sentence, with a two-year supervision requirement.

He pleaded guilty to eight charges.

Rodger admitted downloading six indecent photographs of children - two showed a baby, one involved an 11-year-old girl and another was of a girl aged around eight.

He also pleaded guilty to possessing two prohibited images of a child.

The court heard how thumbnail images made up of small images of children related to some of the charges.

Magistrates at Exeter ordered Rodger to attend the internet sex offender treatment programme.

A sexual offences prevention order was made for five years, which includes prohibiting Rodger from having any unsupervised contact with a child under 18.

He cannot live at or visit any premises in the presence of under-18s, unless an approved adult is present, and with their prior knowledge. Nor can they travel in his car.

The order also bans Rodger from working or volunteering with children and taking photographs of anyone under 18.

He is also banned from hanging around areas where children gather, such as parks or schools.

The court heard how computer equipment was seized from Rodger’s Exmouth home in October 2012.
