When cupid’s arrow was thrown at a pub dart’s match in 1966, it resulted in a family party some 50 years later to celebrate the couple’s golden wedding anniversary.

Lionel and Judith Howell, of Bidmead, Littleham, marked their milestone anniversary with family and friends at the Swans Nest, Exminster, celebrating 50 years of marriage, tying the knot on September 30, 1967.

The great-grandparents credit their long and happy marriage to give-and-take and a pinch of humour.

Lionel, 78, an Exmouth charity champion, said: “I do all the giving, she does all the taking.”

“You just have to keep trying and trying and trying…until someone better comes along!”

Judith, aged 69, said: “You have got to work at things. It’s give and take.”

Lionel first met Judith when he was 10 years old and delivering milk around Exmouth.

“She was a one year old and in a pushchair and she was screaming in the garden,” he said.

When Lionel left the Royal Navy in 1966, their paths crossed again while playing darts at the Albion Inn pub.

“She was a bit of alright,” said Lionel.

“He was alright. I did fancy him,” said Judith.

The couple started going out and a year later, in 1967, they married at Exeter registry office.

Lionel said: “Every time I went into the pub and was playing darts, she would make me empty my pockets out for sixpences; eventually we bought a Labrador dog with the money.”

Newly-wed Judith, then 19 years old and husband Lionel, then aged 28, started their married life in a flat in Phillips Avenue, Exmouth; the couple later moved to a house in Churchill Road.

They also ran and lived at the Bow House hotel, on the Beacon, until they moved to Cheshire Road, where they stayed for 36 years.

Lionel and Judith have three children, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
