Archant

A ‘friendly’ seal which approached an Exmouth boat on a fishing trip last week has been melting hearts on social media.

The sociable seal has proved popular with members of our Enjoy Exmouth More Facebook group, gaining many ‘likes’ and ‘loves’.

The Starcross – Exmouth Ferry team took this picture close to Dawlish, but believe the adult seal belongs to a group that regularly visits Exmouth and Sidmouth’s waters too.

Proprietor Mark Rackley reckons the close encounter was a food-hunting mission for the seal, which came right up to the boat.

He said: “I’m no expert, but I’ve seen it once or twice and it was obviously looking for food. There are a couple that come up the river right off Exmouth; it looks like one of the adults.

“We are pretty sure they are the same seals which we see from Holcombe right up to Sidmouth.”
