A drunken thug who tried to strangle his girlfriend in a tent on a cliff top in Exmouth will be sentenced at Exeter Crown Court.

Sean Stone punched Amy-Leigh Drew and then pinned her to the ground with his knees as he tried to choke her, Exeter Magistrates Court was told.

The 25 year old and his girlfriend, who both lived in the tent on the Exmouth cliff top, rowed following a boozy pub crawl after watching England beat Tunisia in the World Cup.

Stone admitted assault causing actual bodily harm.

Prosecutor Emma Cross said Miss Drew earned money to provide for jobless Stone - but he argued with her about how much she was drinking.

The attack happened last month in an isolated spot in the early hours on a cliff top at Exmouth.

Miss Drew suffered a black eye in the beating as Stone tried to choke her, the court heard.

Miss Drew said Stone was always violent towards her but said the relationship was over before he seriously hurt her.

Julia Brassington, defending, said it was ‘a nasty assault’ and accepted a pattern of violence against women has emerged.

Magistrates were told how Stone had been jailed for 22 months for an attack on a previous partner when he tried to strangle her too.

After Stone admitted assault causing actual bodily harm he was remanded to be sentenced at Exeter Crown Court; magistrates said the were concerned about the victims in both cases being strangled.
