Exmouth Community College – like many schools in the area – has closed for today (Thursday, March 1), due to the inclement weather and the Met Office’s amber warning.

In a statement on the college’s website, the principal Andrew Davis said that although there is limited snow in Exmouth this morning, the forecast was for increasingly bad weather to come during the day.

“Given the logistical difficulties of closing the school during the day and ensuring that all parents/carers know we have had to send their child home, in addition to the problem for children who catch a bus into the college, we feel we have no choice but to take the precautionary measure to close the school.

“The risk that significantly worsening conditions poses throughout the day for students to be stranded at the college or parents and carers having to collect their children in potentially exceptional road conditions is an unacceptably high risk.

“We have waited for as long as possible to get the most accurate forecast since we do not take this decision lightly. However this forecast including the amber warning has been in place for the last 24 hours.”

Mr Davis said that although everything possible would be done to remain open tomorrow (Friday, March 2), there was a possibility the college would remain closed, due to the predicted ongoing bad weather.

He recommended checking with the college website for the latest update.
