An Exmouth school is up for a national award for its work in helping children to read.

Marpool Primary School is a finalist in the national Reading Recovery Awards, in the category for working with parents.

The school has been nominated for its success with its Reading Recovery programme, which provides specialist help to pupils so they can catch up to the reading abilities of their classmates.

Reading Recovery teacher Tina Tapp said: “We are proud to be finalists. It’s exciting to have our strong partnership with parents recognised nationally.

“We work closely with parents, and this is reflected in the accelerated reading progress of the children.”

Parent Sadie Sari, whose son Ali is enrolled in the scheme, said: “Marpool School, and especially Mrs Tapp, has been instrumental in the development of Ali’s reading progress.”

The winners of the award will be announced at the Institute of Education in London today
(Friday).
