Hospiscare is ramping up its East Devon Day Hospice Appeal this month as the charity urgently needs more support to reach their £250,000 target, which will help to finish the build and run the first year of the service.

Hospiscare offers end-of-life care and support to patients and their families in Exeter, Mid and East Devon. The charity has identified a desperate need for a day hospice in East Devon. The new day hospice, which is being built in Honiton, will provide patients with professional care and support closer to home. It will be a place for people with terminal illnesses to visit and meet with people in similar situations whilst getting essential treatment and help to manage their pain.

The new East Devon Day Hospice is being built in partnership with Budleigh Salterton, Exmouth and Lympstone and Sidmouth Hospiscare as patients in all these areas will benefit from the new venture.

The appeal has seen some great support from across East Devon raising an incredible £50,000 to date from individuals, groups and businesses, showing that there are many ways to get involved and make a difference.

Diana Virgin and Alex Waldron, pictured, shaved their hair off to raise sponsorship for the appeal in memory of a friend who sadly died of cancer. The pair saw the need to bring care closer to the people of East Devon, and have raised a staggering £4,055.

Diana and Alex would like to thank the generosity of their friends, family and customers for helping them raise this fantastic total. Diana said: “We know how important Hospiscare is, and to have somewhere here in Honiton so people in East Devon won’t have to travel as far when they are not feeling their best will make a huge difference to the quality of their lives.”

Sarah Smith, the Hospiscare appeal manager, added: “It has been brilliant to see the support so far from across the community. We really need to ramp up the appeal in June and July to get more people involved to reach our target.

“We have seen great support from the readers of this paper and want to encourage anyone reading to donate today – you can make a huge difference and help us bring vital care closer to home in your community.”
