An Exmouth couple are celebrating after coming away with three gold medals at the World Dragon Boat Championships.
Paddling for Great Britain, Amanda Taylor-Broadhurst was in gold medal winning 10-woman senior crews over 200m and 500m, while husband Bernard’s boat took gold in the senior 10-man 500m race, and also picked up a bronze in the 200m.
The couple, from Sturges Road, were delighted with their success at the championships in Hungary, which followed their success in the winning GB team at last year’s European Championship.
Amanda said: “We’re absolutely over the moon, it’s just fantastic. It’s the first time I think any of the seniors have won gold at the World Championships.
“It was scorching hot, and we’re not used to that sort of weather, but we did excellent.
“It’s a totally different ball game to the Europeans. You are on the world stage and the opposition there fight all the way so it’s fantastic racing, which is what it’s all about.”
Amanda previously raced at the World Championships in Tampa in 2011, having only taken up the sport in 2010, and is now looking forward to next year’s European Championships, before the World Championships in 2015 in Canada.
The Canadian contest is expected to be a showstopper, partly because the organisers there have received government funding, but for British paddlers money can be tight, and Amanda believes there should be more funding available, particularly for her and Bernard’s senior category and above.
“Any funding or grants all seem to be focused on younger people and really they need to re-evaluate this because it’s not encouraging older people to go out and race.
“In Hungary our grand dragons [over-50s] came out faster than our prems [all ages].
“We need to be promoting that age group, because we’ve got some fantastic paddlers over-40.”
Although Amanda does have her gym time and swimming sessions sponsored by LED – for which she said she would like to thank them – she is also looking at getting sponsorship from local businesses, and would be willing to carry their logo on her racing gear as she trains and competes all over the country.
