Exmouth RNLI crews towed two boats to safety after they suffered engine problems while in Lyme Bay

Exmouth’s lifeboats were launched rescued two broken down vessels from Lyme Bay on Monday afternoon.

The inshore lifeboat, George Bearman, was launched when a 22-foot powerboat’s fan belt broke and the engine was unable to cool.

After an emergency Pan Pan call was broadcast, the RNLI crew towed the vessel and the family onboard to their berth at Exmouth marina.

A Portland coastguard spokesperson said: “Exmouth RNLI inshore lifeboat was tasked to the assistance of a 22ft Regal 220 speedboat with two adults and a child aboard, which had lost its fanbelt off Budleigh Salterton and was unable to proceed under power.

“The lifeboat towed the vessel back to Exmouth marina where they were met by Exmouth coastguard rescue officers.”

Around an hour later the all-weather lifeboat, R and J Welburn, was launched to help a fishing boat and its crew, after the 23-foot day fisher suffered motor failure 24 miles south of Lyme Regis.

The stricken vessel was towed back to Torquay harbour.
