Coastguard officers were called out yesterday to rescue a dog which had gone over a cliff in Exmouth.

The call came at 4.27pm, when Exmouth and Beer coastguards were tasked to the incident at Otter Cove, Sandy Bay, in which the dog had reportedly chased a rabbit over the cliff.

An Exmouth Coastguard spokesman said: “On arrival at Sandy Bay, the dog’s owners were quickly located and once the location of the dog was established.

“Full cliff rescue equipment was set up and a rope rescue technician was deployed down the cliff.

“The dog - a previously white but now a very dirty, muddy brown young Alsatian - was recovered from the ledge to the top of the cliff and reunited with it’s owners, a little scared but none the worse for it’s ordeal.”
