A pet dog who fell 40 feet from cliffs at Orcombe Point was reunited safe and well with its owners

Cliff top dog walkers are being warned to keep their pets on leads after a golden retriever fell 40 feet from cliffs at Exmouth.

Exmouth coastguard team and the town’s RNLI crew were tasked on Saturday morning after receiving an emergency call that a dog had fallen from Orcombe Point.

Portland Coastguard said the dog was found by two beach walkers and reunited ‘safe and well’ with its owners, who were on holiday in the area.

Coastguards said ‘fortunately’ the dog survived the accident.

Cindy Rodaway, Portland Coastguard watch manager, said: “When walking near cliffs you should keep your dog on a lead to keep them safe.

“Even well behaved and obedient dogs can still behave unpredictably and run over cliffs when they hear or smell something interesting.

“If your dog goes over please don’t attempt a rescue. In an emergency contact 999 for the coastguard.”

A Springer spaniel which fell 150 feet from cliffs at Durdle Door did not survive.

  • How many more dogs have got to fall over the cliffs before the council put up warning signs?......it must cost a fortune to rescue them !
