The council’s environmental health team have handed out four fixed penalties for offences including fly tipping and littering.

Fly-tippers from Ottery and Exmouth have been hit with fixed penalty fines totalling £600 by the district council’s environmental health team.

Staff have issued four fines recently across the district including a £400 penalty to an Ottery resident for dumping a large quantity of waste in Birdcage Lane.

In a second incident, an Exmouth resident fly-tipped household waste in Tedstone Lane, Woodbury, and was hit with a fixed penalty of £200.

The team also fined a woman from Tiverton for rubbish found in Forest Gate car park, Killerton, and handed out an £80 penalty to a man caught throwing littering from the passenger window of a commercial vehicle.

Cllr Tom Wright, EDDC portfolio holder for the environment, said: “Any fly tipping in the countryside and elsewhere is regarded as an unacceptable practice which spoils our outstanding environment. Our officers will always follow up information received and take enforcement action if possible.

“The recent successes in these four cases demonstrate the effective enforcement work being carried out within the Environmental Health team. Householders must make sure that anyone they pass their waste onto is a registered waste carrier who will take their waste to a licensed disposal facility, otherwise they may be liable for action to be taken against them.”
