The heat was on in the kitchen for James Watson when he took part in Come Dine With Me.

James Watson is keeping a lid on whether he was crowned king of the cooks after filming an episode of the Channel 4 series Come Dine With Me.

James, 34, who grew up in Exmouth, recently took part in the five-day cook-off to win £1,000 – but you will have to wait until the show is aired later this year to find out if he was successful, writes Becca Gliddon.

The former Exmouth Community College student said his guests were treated to a slap-up meal, which featured a starter using locally-caught seafood from Ingham Fisheries in Lympstone.

Also on James’ menu was duck breast plus a boozy ‘naughty’ Devon cream tea.

James, a technical consultant who now lives in Exeter, said: “I enjoyed being on the show. I didn’t think the experience was what it was going to be.”

Fans of the show will know the format – five people take turns every night for one week to cook for their fellow contestants.

Part way through each episode, guests ‘snoop’ around their host’s home for an insight into their personality. “It was mentioned that I have a lot of anti-ageing products in my bathroom,” said James.

At the end of each night the contestants secretly score the evening, the host’s food and entertainment. The person with the highest score at the end of the week wins the cash prize.

Each contestant is given £125 towards the cost of food, although James said he topped up this amount to keep the alcohol flowing.

James’s competition day began at 8am, with food preparation and filming. His guests arrived at 4pm and stayed into the early hours of the morning.

He said he made an effort to win over his fellow contestants in a bid to come out top.

“Off camera, everybody got on,” said James. “On camera, we were specific people. On camera I was the cocky boy about town.

“When it came to my day, when I did my cooking, I felt like I was playing a character.

“That said, I had to make sure my particular character was charming to the people on the show.”
