Crews have left the scene after being called to a property in Woodmanton, Woodbury, shortly after 7.30pm on Monday, April 17.

A roof of a thatched property in Woodbury has been completely destroyed, and the first floor severely damaged, in a blaze that lasted more than 12 hours.

Devon and Somerset Fire Service mobilised more than 15 crews from across Devon to Woodmanton, Woodbury, after receiving a call from the occupant on Easter Monday (April 17), shortly at 7.30pm.

First on the scene were firefighters from Sidmouth, Budleigh, Middlemoor, Topsham and two crews from Exmouth and Exeter Danes Castle.

The fire service also requested a specialist water carrier from Danes Castle and incident command unit from Honiton to the scene. To tackle the blaze crews used eight breathing apparatus, two foam jets, two main jets, two extension ladders and drag forks to extinguish the fire.

A Devon and Somerset Fire Rescue spokesman said the fire was started accidentally.

He added: “This incident is now complete with all appliances now come away. In total crews used 8 BA, 2 foam jets, two main jets, two extension ladders and drag forks to extinguish the fire, which started accidentally, in the privately owned two storey home.

“The thatch roof was completely destroyed and the first floor was severely damaged by fire, with the remainder of the house suffering water and smoke damage.

“Crews worked throughout the incident salvaging as much of the contents as possible. No persons were involved or injured and a revisit will be made later on this morning as a precaution.”

Crews from Seaton, Cullumpton, Teignmouth, Ashburton, North Tatwon, Torquay, Chagford, Newton Abbot, Crediton, Dawlish also assisted during the operation.
