A Budleigh Salterton dentist has retired from the profession, after more than 30 years in practice.

Dr Paul Maslen, of Budleigh Salterton Dental Practice, has retired on grounds of ill health, but in his many years in Budleigh has made countless friends among his vast list of patients, in the town and beyond, and so will have many well-wishers for the future.

Paul trained at The Royal London Hospital where he was awarded the Oral Surgery Prize.

He became an oral surgery house surgeon, and after three years as an associate in Cheltenham moved to Budleigh Salterton in 1983, initially working with partners Dr Margaret Lock and Dr Rosemary Longhurst, who imparted an enormous amount of knowledge and experience.

After Dr Longhurst retired, Paul took over the business, and since then he has been on the North and East Devon Local Dental Committee, and was chairman of the Exeter branch of the British Dental Association.

More recently, he has handed over the reins of the practice to Dr Tom Ollivelle.

Last Friday, Paul was delighted to be joined by colleagues and friends, both old and new, to celebrate the end of a long career.

Away from the surgery, Paul and his wife Angie have raised three sons: Matthew, Ben and Jamie.

A keen golfer, he is well known at East Devon Golf Club for his passion and commitment, but also likes to spend his time travelling, critiquing local eateries and doggedly supporting Aston Villa ‘through their perpetual fight against relegation’.

n On Saturday, September 6, Paul is hosting a ‘Great Devon Bake Off’ to mark his retirement and raise money for Hospiscare, in The Peter Hall between 2pm and 4pm.

There will be a ‘dentist-themed’ cake competition, with cream teas for sale in aid of charity.

Patients, friends and the general public are all welcome to pop down for a sugary treat!
