THERE’S a new – and very special ice cream – that takes some licking at Antonio’s coffee house and ice-cream parlour on Exmouth’s Strand.

And if you buy a Darcey’s Doughnut Delight, you’ll not only be tasting a unique variety but you’ll also be helping to raise money for Exmouth RNLI.

The scrummy mix of doughnut pieces, strawberry jam and vanilla ice cream was created by 11-year-old Darcey Greenland. It was one of 100 entries from pupils at Bassetts Farm Primary School, battling for honours in Antonio’s 2014 Ice Cream Competition.

The contest was devised by Antonio’s owner Tony Badcott to find a unique flavour ice cream to sell at his café in the run-up to Easter and beyond.

Tony, a volunteer member of Exmouth’s RNLI, will be giving a donation to the charity for every doughnut ice cream sold.

The competition was tough, with five recipes making it to the shortlist.

There was Millie’s Jaffa Snap (brandy snaps, Jaffa cake and ice cream) from seven-year-old Millie Oakins. Meanwhile Toby Hill, 11, came up with Bassetts Cream Tea (lumps of scone and clotted cream, strawberry sauce, tea-flavoured ice cream). And eight-year-old Riley Crisp suggested two varieties – cherry bakewell and rhubarb custard.

“Any of the five shortlisted entries could have won,” said Tony. “I had a number of people help me to decide which one we would go with in the end, but I think everybody was in agreement that Darcey’s Doughnut Delight was the perfect ice cream for this Easter and beyond. It was very simplistic, which is partly why we went with it. Simple and yet very photogenic.

“My parents were lifetime supporters of the RNLI and it’s my way of trying to help a worthwhile local organisation by putting in some donations from this special ice cream.”

“It was great to have a real competition, where children were able to see their idea all the way through to fruition, and the ice cream being sold in the café,” said Mrs Sarah Bennett, headteacher of Bassetts Farm Primary School. “It was fantastic.”

“We’re delighted that every Darcey’s Doughnut Delight ice cream will help raise money for our appeal,” said Emma Tarling, spokesman for Exmouth RNLI.
