Damaging town

10:04 10 February 2012

May I beg a little space in your paper to say how utterly appalled I am at what has happened to the little town I was born and brought up in.

What soulless people destroyed its little green oasis, known for generations as the Strand Gardens, and replaced it with a piazza. Since when has Exmouth been in Italy?

The War Memorial looks stranded in a foreign place. Perhaps it, too, is for the chop and a sporting arena erected in its place. Just think, you could have cage fighting or, better still, bring on the gladiators.

It was bad enough when Shelley Beach and the docks turned into something that would not look out of place on the Mediterranean, and I did wonder how many local families could afford the prices.

What comes next; a steel and glass block of luxury apartments where the Clock Tower stands, a prime site for town houses and flats on the Manor Gardens to create more places for second home buyers.

Or, how about Canary Island-style flats staggering up the cliffs from the seafront to the Beacon? They could go all the way from the top of Chapel Hill to Orcombe Point, and the mind boggles at what could be done with The Maer.

With nature doing its best to change the beach and the town trying to be something it is not, maybe one should forget the old adage about Devon being a little bit of heaven.

Watch out Exmouth does not become like so many places in Spain, fit only for stag and hen nights and lager louts by the score.
